Asteroid City Subtitles(or Asteroid City) is a 2023 American comedy film written, directed, and produced by Wes Anderson, based on a story he co-wrote with Roman Coppola. The cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Steve Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell and Matt Dillon, Hong Chau , Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan and Jeff Goldblum. The plot revolves primarily around a play about the events of a Junior Stargazer conference in a retro-futuristic version of 1955, but becomes metatextual as the creation of the play is the subject of a television documentary. It is Anderson’s homage to the popular memory and mythology of aliens and UFOs observed near nuclear test sites in the post-war American desert in the 20th century.

Post-production included editor Barney Pilling and a score by frequent Anderson composer Alexandre Desplat, featuring country and western songs by many artists. The official title for Asteroid City was announced at the BFI London Film Festival in October 2021.

Asteroid City premiered on 23 May 2023 at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d’Or. The limited theatrical release began on June 16, 2023 via Focus Features in the United States and was extended to a wide release a week later. With a budget of $25 million, the film grossed $54 million worldwide and received generally positive reviews.

In a retro-futuristic version of the 1950s, a television host presents a documentary about the creation and production of Asteroid City, a play by the famous playwright Conrad Earp. The events of the play are shown in widescreen format and in stylized color, while the television special is shown in black and white Academy format.

In the play, a youth astronomy conference takes place in the fictional desert city of Asteroid City. War photojournalist Augie Steenbeck arrives early at the Junior Stargazer convention with Woodrow, his intellectual teenage son, and his three youngest daughters. When their car breaks down, Augie asks his father-in-law Stanley for help. Stanley, who hates his son-in-law, convinces him to tell the children about their mother’s recent death, which Augie had kept a secret. Augie and Woodrow meet Midge Campbell, a famous but suicidal actress, and her daughter Dinah, who, like Woodrow, is honored at the convention. Augie and Midge and Woodrow and Dinah gradually fall in love with each other over the course of the play. The other participants of the conference arrive: the five-star general Grif Gibson, the astronomer Dr. Hickenlooper, three other teenage honorees (Clifford, Shelly, and Ricky) and their parents (JJ, Sandy, and Roger), a bus full of elementary school kids accompanied by young teacher June Douglas, and a cowboy band led by singer Montana. A local motel offers suitable accommodation for everyone.

The events of Asteroid City become national news. An angry Gibson is about to end the quarantine when the UFO reappears and returns the meteorite to its old position. The general sees new markings on it and concludes that it has been “inventoryed”. Gibson then reinstates the quarantine; The kids, scientists, and parents rise up and use the winners’ inventions to overwhelm the army. In the play’s epilogue, Augie and his family are the last to leave Asteroid City after Gibson officially lifts the quarantine. Woodrow reveals that he won the scholarship and Midge gives Augie her mailing address. Augie and his family quietly drive away.

Throughout the film, the creation of the piece alternates with the piece itself in the television documentary. Some time after Conrad Earp began writing, he met actor Jones Hall, who auditioned at Earp’s home and immediately got the part.

During the taped performance of the play, Hall, who plays Augie, confronts the play’s director, Schubert Green, stating that he “still doesn’t understand the play” and asking Green if he is “doing him any good”. Green tells Hall to keep playing Augie the same way, even if he’s unsure, and that he’s doing it right. After this interaction, during a smoke break on a balcony, Hall meets the actress who was cast as Augie’s wife before her only scene was deleted. She recites the text from the deleted scene to him and he seems to gain new insights from it.

Six months after the play’s performance, Conrad Earp dies in a car accident.
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 75% of the 345 critics are positive, with an average rating of 7/10. Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of “B” on an A+ to F scale, while PostTrak reported that 78% of moviegoers gave the film a positive review, while 51% said they would definitely recommend the film.

In the Guardian, Peter Bradshaw called Asteroid City “horribly entertaining and mildly challenging”. and wrote: “The film rattles with cleverness and engrossing, deftly absorbing the implications of pathos and loneliness without slowing down. It’s tempting to see this scientific emptiness as some kind of symptom, but I really don’t think so: it’s the expression of style.” And what style it is.” John Nugent of Empire praised the film’s unique visual and narrative style, writing: “[Anderson] remains the film’s most astonishing style, the accuracy and detail of every frame never improving”, but warned: “He’s jaded and a little unfocused and always a little smug. If if you don’t like the Wes Anderson movie, you won’t like this one either. But the rest of us have to hope he continues to do well.”
