Hay City Store began more than 30 years ago as a Hill Country gas station and convenience store. Sometime in the early 1990s, a coffee shop was added and the Hay City Store became a place where neighbors could meet over a cup of coffee and grab a bite to eat. The business went dark in 2013 when it was sold and the gas tanks and pumps were removed. Fast forward to March 2015 – a promising series of events, along with hard work, fate and luck… and the good old Hay City Store reopened. Not as a gas station or supermarket, but this time as a full-service restaurant and bar with homemade Texas comfort food, handcrafted cocktails and local beers, spirits and wines. Owners Tamra and Travis Tindol found a way to purchase the property and transform the business into a comfortable, elegant, yet unpretentious gem of a Hill Country restaurant. The City store quickly became known for offering fresh homemade burgers and hand-cut fries, as well as pan-fried chicken patties. The steak salad and tortilla soup are also popular with fans. There’s nothing better than shrimp, grits and buttermilk pancakes served at weekend brunch. The old stone fence still surrounds the 2 1/2 acre oak garden, which now offers outdoor seating, locally made Adirondack seating, fireplaces, live music and games for young and old.
